La Jolla, in the San Diego area, enjoys a beautiful, mild climate year round. January is generally the coldest and wettest month of the year, and August is usually the warmest month. In actuality, however, there is very little variation throughout the year in temperature in the coastal region, except when easterly winds off the desert pushes the temperature up a few degrees. The dry season runs May through September with very little measurable precipitation during this time. October is a transitional month, and is usually dry but can have variable weather. Fog and low clouds along the coast are common, but usually burn off by noon. A marked feature of the climate in this region is the wide variation within a short distance due to the topography of the area. Visitors can enjoy a coastal climate, mountains and desert all within a day's drive of each other.
